The Seven return from Washington
Sounds like a bit of a fairytale, but sadly, it was only Washington Tyne & Wear and not District of Columbia that saw seven SDGP members and coaches travelling to play golf for the weekend. It would have been very nice to travel to the States for a short break, but the party had to settle for a rather cold trip across the Border into "Geordieland".
The venue was the George Washington Hotel, with the party taking up a great offer of dinner, bed and breakfast, and three rounds of golf, golf carts and transport too and from Fife and Edinburgh, for a very reasonable price.
Arrival was on Friday afternoon with just enough light left to complete the first round of eighteen holes, on the well manicured course. Over six thousand yards, with wide fairways and generous greens, saw the "not so magnificent seven" return some lack-lustre scoring. They must have all been feeling guilty about telling everyone they were travelling to England for visits to museums and art galleries and not the golf, beer and more of the same which materialised?
Days two and three scores improved and it appeared everyone came away with the satisfaction of returning at least two half decent scores in bitterly cold conditions. Thankfully there were golf carts available, as this was a long course what with there being no run on the fairways and lots of prayers keeping the rain away.
The staff at the George Washington Hotel and the travel company A2B, certainly added considerably to the enjoyment and atmosphere of the group and many warm thanks and congratulations must be passed to them for their generosity and kind consideration during the visit. The service, food and facilities were excellent and even the general banter in the bar was much appreciated, taking minds off some of the golf being displayed over the weekend.
The Seven are sure to return in 2010! Photos
